SAVEHRA
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that thick, curly hair is more prone to breakage and dryness, and suggests that satin or silk pillowcases or bonnets may reduce friction. Ours is satin.
Cuticle scales lie in one direction. A satin weave floats the yarn along the surface, where a plain cotton weave crosses at every thread.
However long the routine takes, it ends on a pillow. That is the one step nobody chooses on purpose.
A surface that lets hair move, instead of gripping and folding it, leaves less of the night to undo.
With less volume to disguise it, straight hair shows the night by morning: the bend at the crown, the kink where it was pressed.
A blow-dry gets through the day easily. The pillow is the harder test.
Every turn of the head drags the lengths across the pillow. A satin face lets them slide rather than catch.
Colouring works by opening the cuticle, and a raised cuticle gives a rough surface more to catch on.
No extra step and nothing to apply. You change the pillowcase and sleep the way you always do.
That is a long time against a plain weave for hair that is already more porous than it was. Satin gives it a smoother place to rest.
Overnight haircare
Smooth modal satin that lets hair glide instead of catch.
Modal, woven as satin. Modal is a regenerated cellulose fibre made from beech pulp. Satin is the weave, not the fibre: most of the yarn floats along the surface instead of crossing at every thread, which is what gives the face its smooth, even feel.
Hair has a cuticle: overlapping scales that all lie one way. Cotton is spun from short fibres in a plain weave, so its surface is full of crossing points for those scales to catch on. You spend about a third of your life with your hair against a pillow. A satin face gives it less to catch on.
Wash in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. A wash bag helps. Line dry in the shade.
No bleach, no fabric softener, no wringing. If you iron it, use a cool iron on the reverse.
