What it does for your hair

  1. Dermatologists recommend it

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that thick, curly hair is more prone to breakage and dryness, and suggests satin or silk pillowcases or bonnets may reduce friction.

  2. Nothing for the cuticle to lift against

Cuticle scales lie in one direction. A satin weave floats the yarn along the surface, where a plain cotton weave crosses at every thread.

  3. Wash day still has to survive the night

However long the routine takes and whatever it costs in product, it ends on a pillow — and that is the part nobody chooses deliberately.

  4. Less to reset in the morning

A surface that lets hair move instead of gripping and folding it means less of the night to undo before you start the day.

  5. Nothing hides the drag

With less mass to disguise it, straight hair shows every bit of the night by morning: the bend at the crown, the kink where it was pressed.

  6. The blow-dry has to last eight hours

It survives the day easily. Then it meets a pillow, and the part you paid for is the part that goes first.

  7. Cotton is absorbent by design

Some of what you worked through the lengths ends up in the weave instead. A smooth surface has less to take.

  8. The cuticle is already lifted

Colouring works by opening the cuticle. Until it lies flat again, there is more for a rough surface to catch.

  9. You paid for the conditioner, not the pillow

Cotton is absorbent by design, and takes its share of the treatment meant to protect the colour.

  10. Friction is what dulls it

Eight hours of drag against a plain weave, every night, on hair that is already more porous than it was.

What it is

Modal woven as satin. Modal is regenerated cellulose from beech pulp, the high wet modulus kind, which holds its strength and its shape through washing where ordinary viscose does not. Satin is the weave: most of the yarn floats along the surface instead of crossing at every thread, so there is less for hair to catch on.

Why it is a haircare product

Hair has a cuticle: overlapping scales that lie one way. Cotton is spun from short fibres and woven plain, so its surface is a field of cut ends and crossing points. Eight hours of turning against that is the part of the routine nobody chooses deliberately.

Care

Cold or lukewarm water, gentle cycle, mild detergent, a wash bag if you have one. Line dry in shade. No bleach, no fabric softener, no wringing. Cool iron on the reverse if you iron it at all.

One size, made to fit

Every pillowcase is made to 20 × 30 in. One size on purpose, so it fits every pillow.

The back is a slightly rough fabric that grips the pillow, so the case stays put and doesn't slip off as you move through the night.
